Purpose of the study:

The purpose of this study is to examine online communication among adolescents and young people and how it might be related to help-seeking from general practitioners for emotional and psychological problems.


This study is being conducted by Chris McAlinden from the University of Leicester as part of an MSc in Psychological Research Methods. The study is being supervised by Dr Noelle Robertson.

What will be done:

You will be asked to complete seven questionnaires. First you will be asked to provide some brief personal details.  You will also be asked questions regarding the use of online communication, perceptions of online communication, and your views regarding the use of online communication to seek help from your GP for emotional and psychological problems. Finally, you will be asked questions regarding social anxiety, mood, and symptoms associated with perceptual changes.

It is anticipated that the questionnaires should take no more than 15-20 minutes to complete.

Are there any criteria to be eligible for the study?

  • Participants should be 16–24 years of age.
  • Participants should be frequent Internet users.
  • Partcipants should not be currently receiving treatment 
    for a mental health problem.
     
  • Participants should not have received a formal diagnosis of a mental health problem in the past 12 months.
